Save the Date Guidance and Etiquette

You’re engaged! You’ve picked a venue and set your wedding date! Congrats!! Now, what to do about Save the Dates?

1) Do we need to send them?

  • If you are having a destination wedding, you should absolutely be sending Save the Dates!

  • If you’re a year or so out from your date and want to ensure that your guests don’t miss your big day - you should be sending save the dates.

  • If you’re closer to your wedding date (less than six months away) and you’re about to be mailing your invitations, you could skip on sending a save the date.

  • Other than that, send them! They’re fun and a great way to start getting your guests just as excited about your engagement and wedding day.

2) We haven’t finalized our guest list. Who should receive our save the dates?

It’s imperative that everyone who receives your save the date definitely be on your final wedding guest list. Once you tell someone to save your wedding date, there's no turning back.

3) What should they say?

A wedding save-the-date serves as a heads-up that there's a formal invitation on the way with all the event details, so the wording doesn't have to be anything too fancy. We recommend keeping it simple with these key elements:

  • A version of "Save the Date” or “Save Our Date”

  • Your names

  • Your wedding date

  • The city where you'll marry

  • Wording indicating there’s a “Formal invitation to follow”

  • Bonus: If you have a wedding website and are ready for guests to peruse it - you can put that on too!

Need some inspiration? Here’s three different wording examples based on tone / formality:

FORMAL NOTICE

San Francisco, California
Formal invitation to follow

FUN & FLIRTY

He proposed ... she said, "yes!"
Jack + Jill

4) When do we need to mail them?

The short answer: As soon as possible! (Yes, really). As soon as you have your location and date set, you should start on your save the dates. We’d love to create something truly unique for you! Most of our custom save the dates can be completed in 4-6 weeks from receipt of deposit. To know more about wedding stationery timing, reference our Stationery Timeline!
