Matt & Robb's Modern Day Gatsby Wedding in D.C.
November 6, 2019
Ashleigh Robinson
In April 2019, two of our favorite grooms tied the knot on the Georgetown waterfront in D.C. at The Berliner. Read on to see all the details and learn more about how we helped them bring their modern day gatsby wedding to life!
Robb & Matt came to Type A with a very specific vision in mind: something between full on Gatsby and something lighter. They loved the idea of texture, incorporating a metallic copper, and using stained glass looking lines. From the beginning, it was truly a collaborative process. Robb is a former graphic designer and Matt had awesome creative input. So, needless to say, we all left our initial consultation with a clear vision and lots of excitement!
Concept Sketches drawn by Ashleigh during our initial consultation.
We started with their monogram using a vintage font that was slightly angled with rounded edges. Using their initials, “M” and “R”, we played up that this was a gay wedding, celebrating “Mr. and Mr.” This theme drove every other element of their wedding stationery!
A subtle, great element we loved was their non-traditional paper chosen for the invitation cards! Instead of brilliant white, cream, or eggshell, they chose a very light dusty blue that contrasted beautifully against their copper thermography .
We used the M & R to create a delicate geometric pattern mimicking stained glass. This was laser cut to form the front flap of their custom backing.
Their digital addressing perfectly matches their invitations and sneaks in a small detail that's actually engraved on the inside of both of their rings ✨ #hiddenmessages #allinthedetails
To up their envelope game, they sourced vintage postage from The Little Postage House .
Their sassy RSVP wording is one of our favorites!
“I simply can’t tell you how much we love it. Honestly, I pull it up several times a day and look at it. And am battling the urge to share with everyone because I also want them to be surprised at the same time.” — robb
“I love it ALL!!!...they are striking and subtle, bold and understated....they are just amazing!!! The marriage of the colors really pulls it all together!!! ”— matt
We love a good welcome bag! Robb & Matt’s was customized with a schedule of events (designed and made by us!), metro map, and a bunch of goodies. We also love getting unintentional recommendations from clients. As soon as Emma saw this photo she needed to know what Capital City Mambo Sauce (a D.C. staple) tasted like. And just FYI, it's fantastic!
We designed and made their welcome sign, incorporating various elements from the invitation suite.
Robb had us surprise Matt with a custom illustration of Madonna shaking a polaroid for their guest book, Polaroid station sign!
We handmade their guestbook. It was customized with navy Japanese book cloth, a copper cover and finished with copper book screws. We lined the inside covers with their monogram pattern and used shimmer navy paper (that contrasted perfectly with the copper pens guests signed with).
“I think I want everything to shimmer. Because shimmer is fabulous.” — robb
We couldn't agree more! Not only was their invitation made with shimmery paper and envelopes, we printed all of their day-of stationery on metallic pearl paper, in the same dusty blue! 🌟#liveforshimmer #nevertoosparkily
For Robb & Matt's day-of stationery, we also created awesome favor tags that doubled as their escort cards! Each guest got their very own mug for a Moscow Mule, a staple of their cocktail menu.
S👏T👏U👏N👏N👏I👏N👏G👏! I don't think I could've imagined a better cake for Matt & Robb, done by the fabulous Cakes by Gene . (We were told that it tasted just as good as it looked!)
To end off the night, they had cookie ice cream sundaes from the Captain Cookie food truck. Then were sent off with a sparkler exit!
Congratulations Robb & Matt!
